6. Diyarbakir Prison (Turkey): This prison has often been criticized for its human rights violations. From 1981 to 1984, thirty four prisoners lost their lives due to acts of mental and psychological torture practiced. The prison is also famous for sexual abuse, poor hygiene and incarcerating children. Their barbaric crimes and human rights violations put it at the top of the list of the worst prisons in the world.
7. La Sabaneta Prison (Venezuela): A prison where diseases proliferate and detainees do not have any activities. An outbreak of cholera killed in prison once more than 700 detainees in 1994 was known for a massacre that led to the death of 100 prisoners. The guards get little and often resort to extreme violence, prisoners are literally abandoned and choose to fight each other which results in many deaths per year.
8. La Sante Prison (France): This prison was also famous for its lack of conditions. Detainees were forced to live in stalls filled with rats and lice, with some of the prisoners to become literally insane. The strongest prisoners became weaker slaves and they were repeatedly violated. Veronique Vasseur who was medical in prison, released a book in 2000 which denounced the atrocities performed at that location. In 2003 the number of suicides shot with 112 detainees to do away with your own life.
9. Rikers Island Prison (New York): Reports of stabbings, beatings and brutal treatment by guards characterize this American prison. In 2007 a prisoner named Charles Afflic was violently assaulted by a guard while on his back, his injuries were so severe that he needed a brain surgery. The prison is known for its large number of prisoners with mental illness who often opt for suicide.
10. Tadmor Prison (Syria): Located in the desert, the Tadmor prison is famous for its violations of human rights and brutal executions. In 1980 after an attempted assassination of President Hafez al-Assad, prisoners of Tadmor paid with their lives when helicopters landed with commands in prison and was carried out a massacre in which many believe to have died more than 1,000 detainees.
